The longer view - Apple plays it safe at WWDC

30.11.1999 / Mac Net Journal

The long view of today's announcements during the keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco is that Apple played it safe publically. As many sites have pointed out, we may not have known the specs for the Mac Pro ahead of time, but we could certainly see it coming. They even played it safe by sticking with the same cheese grater enclosure. That being said, playing it safe also means that power users who need more punch from their computers than can be offered by a MacBook Pro will likely be happy to be able to push the bits a lot faster with an up to 3 Ghz, 64-bit processor in a Mac Pro. The most interesting news from this morning comes in the tease preview of Leopard, the next version of Mac OS X that is many months away from launching. As the promo page on the Apple Web site states, any or all features referenced in the sneak peek Web page are subject to change, but there are some tantalizing new features coming - assuming Apple makes them work as advertised. Welcome additions to the OS include a new backup versioning tool called Time Machine and a virtual desktop tool called Spaces. Apple will apparently also encourage people to create multimedia e-mails in Mail 3.0 - sure to be the bane of e-mail purists who want to actually be able to see content across any e-mail client in old fashioned text - and add video effects to iChat. The one useful new tool in iChat is the ability to set up a iChat Theatre (not Theater, because after all, this is coming from Apple...) session to do a slideshow or presentation. It is almost impossible to judge the real impact of the changes proposed for OS X in Leopard until we are closer to the launch date, but all facetiousness aside, there are some much-needed improvements. The devil will be in the details - how well the new tools actually work. Fingers are crossed here. What was your favorite announcement from WWDC? postCount('WWDC2006'); ]]>
