Free Windows Media Plugin for Quicktime Available

Visitors to Microsoft's Windows Media website for Mac have recently discovered that the company is apparently no longer making a version of their Windows Media Player for the Mac platform. Instead of providing access to a download of the latest version, Microsoft now provides for download a free third-party plugin that works with QuickTime so users can open Windows Media files directly through QuickTime Player or QuickTime aware applications such as web browsers.

Major Apple Announcement on October 12

Apple has once again got Apple fans and computer rumor mills buzzing with news that it will make a major announcement on October 12, 2005. Apple has recently sent to media outlets an invitation to media event. The invitation features a red curtain and the words "One More Thing..." which is Steve Jobs' famous line from MacWorld presentations, just prior to the announcement of a major product or service offering. SubEthaEdit has an unorthodox name, but if you're smart enough to get past it, what you'll find is an extremely powerful, elegant text editor that will suit the needs of almost any Mac user, and is particularly useful for programmers or web developers who work with source code. With many of the most valuable features of high-priced professional editors (such as BBEdit), it is a small miracle that SubEthaEdit can be downloaded and used for free (note that use in commercial environments requires a license purchase, however the program is not limited in any way for non-commercial users).

Book Review: Take Control of Tiger

As with every major release of Mac OS X, OS 10.4 Tiger has been escorted into the Mac user ranks by a plethora of educational books on how to use the newest version of Apple's operating system. One such book is "Take Control of Tiger," which is a print offering from the popular "Take Control" eBook series published by Adam and Tonya Engst of "TidBits" fame (TidBits is a longstanding Mac e-mail newsletter).
